The Cons Of Shingles Tiles.

Shingles tiles are super common for roofs restoration around Melbourne. Many people have them, but it is important to understand what you will get with them. In last month’s blog post, “The Pros Of Having Shingle Tiles”, we looked at why you should be seeking to get these tiles. But we also promised that we would look into the reasons why having shingle tiles may not be the best choice for your roof. We have five cons of having shingle roof tiles listed below for your information:

Shorter Lifespan Compared To Other Options

This will depend on the type of shingle tile you are getting. Metal and slate shingle tiles can last you up to 50 years. The catch? They are ridiculously expensive and constant blow out people’s budgets. The most common options are timber and asphalt and these materials last between 15 to 30 years – if you maintain them over this period.

Can Get Deformed & Discoloured

Due to the materials in shingle tiles (mostly timber or asphalt), there is a higher chance of discolouration and deformation (bending, fading, scaring, and staining) occurring. This is not going to happen instantly but over the years and constant exposure to Melbourne’s ever-changing weather will see these tiles change their original form.

Same Applies To Moss & Mildew

As mentioned above, due to the materials in shingle tiles, there is always a chance that moss and mildew will appear. Combine these materials with heavy rains or extreme heat, and you can expect a growing amount of moss and mould collecting. Leave this for too long, and before you know it, you’ll find your roof shingles will deteriorate faster.

Maintenance Is Required

Unlike other types of roofing materials – such as slate and terracotta – you will need to maintain and check up your shingle roof constantly. We are not talking a weekly occurrence, but we are suggesting that at least twice a year, you look to maintain and check your shingle tiles.

 Constant Repairs Over The Years

Following on from the point above, shingle tiles do need repairs now and then. You don’t need to pay much to repair them, but there are more likely to damage through intense seasons (winter and summer), therefore requiring repairs. If you conduct your regular check-ups, or a hire a professional to do it, you can avoid any major problems like leaks down the line.

So these are the reasons on why you shouldn’t get roof shingles. Although, if you already have them, there is no need to worry. With the team at Australian Roofing Group, we can guarantee that your roof will last for years to come. We have everything you need to ensure that your shingles are robust and durable for your home.
